From the Coast we stopped at a campground and dumped our waste and refilled or fresh water. Picked Blackberries and headed inland a bit to see the Avenue of the Giants.
First stop was the Chandelier “Drive Through Tree”, which wasn’t quite big enough for Tony to “Drive Through”.
Spent most of the day driving through Humboldt and stopped here and there at some tourist and scenic spots.
The redwoods are majestic and ancient. Powerful and beautiful. In this vast land of mountains, hills, ocean, and huge trees you can’t help but feel belittled by nature
Had lunch in Eureka CA. at the Lost Coast Brewery and Cafe, and made our way up to Crescent City, tried to stay at Jedediah Smith Campground (which was full) and then took off up a dirt road to Big Flat Campground in the Klamath National Forest. Turned out to be a beautiful little backwoods campground with nice flat sites and its own little creek – Aly swam in. Very quiet and private, only a couple other campers, we rode bikes around the campground. Vault toilets were clean and place was well kept. There were some boondocking spots along the road into here, but many were hard to access with Travato or very unlevel. It was $8.00 I think.
In the morning, we drove back down and hiked a couple trails across the river back to Jedediah. The Stout Grove trail was a beautiful walk thru an awesome stand of old growth trees, across the creek and into the campground.
Also a very fun drive down the dirt road back to Crescent City!
Good thing I bring along my loggin’ gear to keep the roads clear…
